Wide Leg Ginger Jeans #2

Since nailing the fit of my skinny Ginger Jeans and then modifying to an even better fitting wide leg version earlier this year, I’ve officially lost all fear, trepidation, or hesitancy around making jeans. So when I decided I needed some light-wash, wide leg jeans for our cooler-than-usual summer weather, the most difficult part was finding the right fabric. But I found it!

I wanted to repeat my black version with a very slightly wider leg so I was looking for an 8.5 or 9 oz. light wash denim with 2% spandex. I found this 8.5 oz. version at Simplifi Fabric. It has a really nice weight and structure and good stretch. Best of all, it’s exactly the colour I was looking for.

Here are the sizing and fit details:

  • Used the pattern from my black version (size 4 ish but I’ve made so many versions that I can’t say for sure what size they are any more) with an added half inch of width at the hem edge on either side of both the front and back legs, tapering to nothing by mid-thigh
  • Followed the exact same construction as my black version except top stitching the yoke – I used a normal 3mm stitch instead of a chain stitch
  • My current size is 29 waist, 35 hip

The sewing around the front waist band is a little wonky. I may go back and fix it… or just leave it because it doesn’t matter if they’re perfect and I love them the way they are.

As is my tried and true method now, all my top stitching is done with regular thread. It doesn’t stand out as much as top stitching thread would but it’s much easier for my machine to work with.

I love the fit of these pants. They are fitted through the waist, hips and upper thighs and straight from mid-thigh to hem. I guess they aren’t technically wide leg, more straight, but they are wide enough that I can bend my knees without pain (I have some knee problems that are aggravated by pressure on my knee cap). I love the cropped length and the snug fit. They are exactly what I want to be wearing on those summer days that are too cool for dresses.

The zip is from an old pair of RTW jeans that I cut up for parts and the pocket bags are from one of my husbands old shirts.

The best part of having made these pants a number of times now is knowing exactly where the back pockets go. Sewing them on while the pants legs are flat is so much easier. Familiarity also speeds up the process immensely. I had budgeted the entire weekend to make these jeans but I finished them in seven hours, including pattern modifications and fabric cutting. Now I’ve got a free Sunday for adventures with my husband, and yes, I’ll be wearing my new jeans.

When these jeans popped into my mind, they were part of an outfit. I’m just waiting on some white linen to arrive for a cropped Kalle shirt to complete the look. My fully lined, modified Ogden serves in a pinch for my sundeck photo shoot, along with my Astrid Sandals (blog post about them coming soon, I promise).

Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Cory. I made my sandals. They are the Astrid sandal kit from the Shoe Camaraderie based in Australia. I have another blog post about them going up soon!
