This Victoria day long weekend snuck up on me and I was woefully underprepared. The issue: summer weather for the first time this year. The problem: no shorts and no material to use to make any. I was considering what else I could wear in the 22+ degree heat (72 F), when I remembered I had a pair of skinny jeans in the giveaway pile.
Skinny jeans are not ideal for turning into shorts, but if they’re all you’ve got, there is a way that you can make it work without too much hassle. After you cut off the lower leg, open up the side seam of the jeans, up to the bottom of the pocket or the waist band. I went to the bottom of the pocket for mine because I was short on time and didn’t want to mess with the pocket.
Then use pieces from the lower leg to add width to your shorts without disturbing the waistband. Pinning the extra piece in place on both legs and try them on before you sew. Make sure that you don’t open up the seam too far or the fabric of the shorts may not lay right when you wear them.
When you’re happy with how it looks, cut your new triangle out, with seam allowances, and pin it right sides together with the old sides seams. Sew the triangle in place making sure the stitches meet up in a point at the old side seam. Then finish up the hem of the shorts and you’re all done! These shorts took me a couple of hours to whip up, which was perfect timing for quick Saturday morning project before the long weekend really got going.
Here is what these new shorts looked like on me. Perfect pairing to my new custom miAdidas!
Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your next emergency sewing project!
